Captain Brian Wall of Game Fish Charters writes:
Cairns - a busy coastal city in northern Queensland, Australia - is the Marlin Fishing Capital of the World!Lying off the Cairns coastline, where the World Heritage Rainforest meets the Coral Sea, is the Great Barrier Reef - the Seventh Wonder of the World!
The outer edge suddenly diminishes into unknown depths. The outer Barrier Reef chain - Osprey Reef, Bouganville Reef and Holmes Reef to name a few - lies some 50 nautical miles beyond and there is a trench between both sets of reef and beyond.
Sea Mount, rising to 20 fathoms, lies off Cairns between these Reefs, and is used by long-liners and other Commercial Fishing interests.
The Pacific current runs down this trench, bringing the Tuna family, Mahi Mahi, and other pelagic species, which in turn brings the marlin.
When this current occurs, the water temperature rises, and the fish bite.
This occurs normally about August/September each year, with the current running North to South, sweeping in along the edge of the Barrier Reef, then further south later in the year.
Black Marlin and Blue Marlin are caught off Cairns at this time. Blacks are more prevalent, and 1000 lb (450 kg] fish are a regular occurrence. These days, to help conserve these magnificent species, Charter fleets tag and release 99% of fish brought to the boats.
Blue Marlin of this size have also been caught, but they seem to roam the deeper waters of the canyon beyond the Reef edge and are more prevalent later in the year. Christmas arrives while fish are still about, and Charters are on the decline.
If we could attract Anglers to Cairns with adventure in mind, we could extend our fishing season into February, when the big fish roam the azure waters of the Coral Sea...
